Inspiration in the “Ordinary”

While recently enjoying the shelly shores of Marco Island, the little gem pictured here washed up from the Gulf of Mexico.  On a wide swath of shells of all shapes and sizes, this Purdue-colored one stood out. What do you think of when you see it?  (Pause to let you ponder). I saw a fish, my son saw a leaf, his friend saw a bird. There are likely many other interpretations.  While die-hard shell collectors likely would pass this shell over, it stood out to me.

This vacation moment was a reminder that we each bring unique perspectives based our life stories.  I coach farmers during interviews that while they may see their lives as “routine,” what they experience is unique and fascinating to the other 98 percent of the population who doesn’t live on a farm.  You don’t know how your life’s narrative might inspire others or help them appreciate something they take for granted. It is important to share perspectives and personal experiences to help enrich those around us. In other words, tell your story!

As I sit here at my desk working with clients, my “fish” shell will be a reminder of how inspiration can come from what others might see as ordinary.
